Abhijit Ray, Kolkata:Bengal protested when all the governmental work was being recommended in Hindi by the BJP Government. Many of the Academicians and conservatives from all over the country have called for united resistance as this recommendation is unconstitutional. They further claim that this Hindi aggression policy of the BJP-ruled Center is an attack on not only Bengal, but all ‘non-Hindi’ states. At West Bengal, ‘Bangla Paksha’ will hold a protest by burning copies of the central recommendation letter at Kolkata next Wednesday at 5 pm. After three days, there will be protests across the state on Sunday. Many have claimed that the BJP-ruled central government is trying hard to establish the agenda of ‘Hindu, Hindi and Hindustan. Globally famous Linguist Prof. Pavitra Sarkar thinks that it is practically impossible to succeed. His observation, “Such attempts have been made repeatedly by the BJP-controlled central government. But it should be kept in mind that it is against federalism. I don’t think, non-Hindi states, especially South Indian states will ever accept this recommendation. The Hindi vs other Indian regional languages debate is not new. Even during the Congress period, this debate has come to a head. But this time the order to use Hindi in government work has reached the President as a recommendation of the parliamentary committee. From the United Nations, teaching in central schools, IITs, even the High Courts of Hindi-speaking states – Hindi should be used everywhere instead of English, the recommendation said.Notably, the recommendation came from Amit Shah himself under the leadership of the parliamentary committee. A few days ago, he raised a strong question in favor of Hindi as the main language of the country. Recently an all India media has brought the issue of recommendation letter to public. They claim that Home Minister Amit Shah submitted this recommendation letter to President Draupadi Murmu last month. The recommendation states: One, Hindi should be the official language of India in the United Nations. Two, Hindi should be the language of instruction in centrally controlled government educational institutions i.e. KendriyaVidyalayas, IITs, Central Universities. Third, Hindi should also be made the working language of the High Courts in Hindi speaking states. Fourth, Hindi should be kept in place of mandatory English in the government job examination. Five, more than 50 percent of government advertisements should be Hindi advertisements. The recommendation also suggests that an explanation should be sought from any government employee or official who deliberately avoids working in Hindi. If the answer is not satisfactory, it should be mentioned in the annual performance report. All the twenty-two languages in the Eighth Schedule have equal status. It is impossible to implement this recommendation by excluding the state. As per Prof. Pavitra’s speech, “In Hindi-speaking states, work can be done in Hindi. But the non-Hindi speaking states will never accept the central decision to impose Hindi.’ Nevertheless, to say that Bengali’s are famous for their language movement. The Bengali language movement was a cultural and political movement that took place in the then East Bengal from 1947 to 1956. Through this movement created around the Bengali language in order to protect the fundamental rights, the public demand was expressed with the aim of establishing it as one of the state languages of the dominion of Pakistan.
