NEW DELHI, September 9—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Shri Rajesh Lilothia has strongly condemned the decision of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation to change the name of the  Gandhi Ashram  Marg, Ward No 1, in the Narela Assembly Constituency in the name of the father of a BJP sympathizer. The inauguration of the renaming of the road was done by the North MCD mayor.

Shri Lilothia lambasted the BJP for implementing the hidden RSS agenda as  it was highly objectionable that a road, which carries the name of Gandhiji, has been changed in the name of the father of a BJP sympathizer. A delegation from the area, including social activists and RWA members, today met Shri Lilothia at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, here today and submitted  a memorandum, demanding that the name of the road at Ward No. 1 in the Narela Assembly constituency should be restored as “Gandhi Ashram Marg”.  The delegation  included convenor of the Gandhi Ashram Bachao Aandolan Samiti Shri Naresh Gupta, Sharanjit Chawla, Shakti Lukkad, Amit Bhardwaj and Vikas Panchal.

Shri Lilothia said that this incident reflects intolerance towards freedom fighters by BJP. He said that it is an attack just like demolishing the Ambedkar Statue and the historical Sant Ravi Das Mandir in Delhi.

Shri Lilothia has written to the Lt. Governor of Delhi, the Delhi Chief Minister and the Municipal Commissioner about the matter, and requested them to restore the name of the road in Ward No 1 as “Gandhi Ashram Marg”. Shri Lilothia has sought stringent action against those officials who were responsible for the change in name, and demanded that the matter should be referred for review to the Naming Committee in the North MCD so that status quo could be ensured.

Shri Lilothia said that the renaming of the Gandhi Ashram Marg was a gross insult to the Mahatma, which showed the mindset of the  BJP leadership.

Shri Lilothia warned the BJP ruling the MCD that if the name of   the  road at   Ward No 1 in the Narela Assembly constituency is not reverted to Gandhi Ashram Marg, then the Congress workers will take to the streets to ensure compliance.  He said that the demonstration to be organised by the Gandhi Ashram Bachao Andolan on 13th September, Friday will be supported by the Delhi Congress.
