Popularly known as the ‘Singham’ of Karnataka police, IPS officer Kuppuswamy Annamalai hung up his (police) boots on Tuesday.
Deputy Commissioner of police (Bengaluru South) K Annamalai, who is popularly known as ‘Singham’ of Karnataka, Tuesday resigned from the Indian Police Service, to pursue “public service.”
Annamalai, 33, hails from Karur in Tamil Nadu and graduated in mechanical engineering from PSG College in Coimbatore and business administration from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow.
The sense of pride a khakhi (police uniform) brings is unparalleled and the camaraderie I shared with fellow colleagues will never be never forgotten.
Annamalai met Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy in the presence of state Home Minister M B Patil and informed him about his resignation.He thanked the chief minister for providing good opportunity to perform his duties. The Chief Minister also wished him the best, a release from the chief minister’s office said.
Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy tweeted,Annamalai IPS officer has quit government service today. He is a good officer and his quitting the service will be a loss to the administration. However, I wish him all the best for his future career and life he tweeted.

On Tuesday morning he sent a official confirmation about his resignation to media persons after tendering resignation letter to Karnataka DG&IGP,Neelamani N Raju he met commissioner and his senior officers and after receiving the resignation letter T.Suneel Kumar Bengaluru Police commissioner told reporters,he is a upright and honest officer he is resigning for personal reasons we have faith where ever he will go he will serve people we tried to pacify but he dint get convinced. In the South division in his tenure he has controlled all anti social and illegal activities and has brought crime rate down by enhancing the patrolling in the area he was used to work round the clock a very honest and decorated officer who was inspiration for youths as today he has submitted his official resignation to DG&IGP Madam and it will be sent to UPSC and Central Ministry of Home affairs we wish him all the best for his future endeavors he was a very honest officer who has detected many crimes after coming to Bengaluru in one case under his directions the cops nabbed a notorious extortionist gangs,Chain Snatchers and he is the first officer to do a mass transfer he changed whole staff of kumarswamy layout police Station who has assaulted women in their Station he added
Speaking to reporters after meeting Kumaraswamy, Annamalai said the chief minister insisted that he reconsider his decision as the state was in need of his services,but I told him I have made my decision, CM then conveyed his best wishes for my future endeavour.Annamalai said he was not quitting the job because of any political pressure.He lauded political leaders, including Kumaraswamy and former Chief Minister Siddarmaiah, for giving him the freedom to do his duty.The whole state has treated me with respect.I could have worked for a few more days, but some decisions had to be taken.I thank everyone.I have submitted my official resignation from the Indian Police Service today there are still a few procedures to go through with the government but officially I have quit.This is a decission I have taken after putting in a lot of thought over the past 6 months I have always believed one can explore multiple avenues in life.It has been a decade in police service for me now everybody has more than one thing they’re passionate about in their life.Public service is still a passion of mine but I have achieved my scope in civil service as for my future endeavours I need to think about it for 3-4 months.On reasons for his decision, Annamalai said, “Have completed ten years in service.I believe an individual can achieve three passions in a life time, among them is public service, in civil service I think I have achieved my scope.
So I wanted to go outside (of civil service) and do things differently. Right now I haven’t taken any decision, will need three-four months time. I will think and take a decision On joining politics,Annamalai said he has not taken any decision and not spoken to any political or politician about it.I need 3-4 months break he added.
Decission made six months ago.
The kailash Manasarovar trip in the last year made me think of my preferences and the death of 47 year old IPS officer Madhukar Shetty in December 2018,made me look back at my life. I was ready to resign six months ago but did not want to inconvenience the government during elections I want to be a good father to my son and want to go back to farming and write a book and spend time with family in his service as he said I have missed many functions with the family so I have decided to spend my time with family and be a good father to my son and want to stood for the people who helped me when I was in need for now I want to go to my native and do farming he said still I have not decided what next to do I will decided after 3-4 months as I leave all the situation to God what way he will show me will do that and finally he said will miss all my constalbes and junior officers and senior officers  and all my colleagues I love Karnataka and karnataka people and in my one decade I have faith in my work and I have worked honestly for the people and have detected many crimes and brought the crime rate down in the city he added.
Known as upright, “honest” and “brave” officer, Annamalai was so popular among the people during his stint as SP of Udupi and Chikkamagaluru districts that there were protests following his transfer.
 Annamalai, a 2011 batch IPS officer hails from Karur in Tamil Nadu. He began his career as an assistant superintendent of police, Karkala sub-division in 2013.
However, there were reports in the media that he was in touch with some senior RSS functionaries.
Meanwhile, D Roopa Inspector-General of Police, Railways claimed Annamalai is plunging into politics.”Spoke to Annamalai, IPS .@DCPSouthBCP. He has tendered resignation today.He is plunging into politics.It requires guts, boldness to leave cushy, secure, hard earned IPS job. Its heartening to see such achievers n (sic) youngsters diving into politics. Wishing him all the best,” she tweeted.
Annamalai is a native of Karur district in Tamil Nadu. He completed his schooling in Coimbatore and pursued Mechanical Engineering, and later completed his MBA at IIM-Lucknow. While studying for his MBA degree in UP, Annamalai was exposed to the poverty and social disparities of the region. It was at that time that he decided to become a government servant. Annamalai, an IPS officer of 2011 batch, was posted as ASP of Karkala Sub Division on September 4, 2013.This was his first posting. During his tenure, four police stations in the Karkala Sub Division – Karkala Town, Karkala Rural, Kaup and Padubidri – received ISO 9001:2008 certification.He was promoted and posted as Superintendent of Police of Udupi district and took charge on January 1, 2015.
During his tenure as SP of Udupi district, Annamalai K not just won the confidence and hearts of the people but has also earned the name “Udupi’s Singham”. He not only has good crime detection skills but has also put a check on criminal activities like matka, murder, and theft in the district. After he took charge as SP, he has brought about a lot of change in Manipal which is known as an international education hub. He has restricted illegal activities in and around the Manipal area.
After Udupi district, he was transferred to Chikkamagaluru district as superintendent of police where he earned the love of the people. Annamalai managed to put an end to prostitution, drug mafia, betting, and human trafficking in his area of jurisdiction. It was during his tenure that the Dattamala programme was held peacefully for the first time which was hailed by the people of the district. The state government transferred Annamalai as DCP of South Bengaluru City in October 2018.

It’s been an emotional time for me and my best friend who happens to be my wife as well helped to smoothen it out,” he said in the post that went viral and is still trending on the social media.
