Rs 9-crore cash found in car;Income Tax dept launches probe

In a joint operation Electronic City police in co-ordination with Incometax department officials intercepted a Creta car allegedly carrying unaccounted cash worth Rs.9 Crore while it was travelling from Bengaluru towards Hosur on August 18,acting on a request from Income Tax officials.

The vehicle,bearing registration number KL 20 T 8629, was intercepted at a signal on Hosur Road,shortly after the BETL toll,at around 10.30 pm on August 18 by the Electronic City police night-beat staff.

The vehicle,which had two occupants,was brought to the Electronic City police station and handed over to a team of Income Tax officials led by Jagadish,Deputy Director of Income Tax,Unit-22,Bengaluru.

During the subsequent search of the car,Income Tax officials reportedly recovered Rs.9 crore in cash.

One of the occupants was identified as Sachin,42,owner of Sindhu Jewellers in Thoothukudi,Tamil Nadu.

Income Tax officials took him into custody for detailed questioning to ascertain the source and intended destination of the cash.

Following the seizure,Income Tax officials also conducted a search at the residence of the persons concerned in Tamil Nadu and reportedly recovered an additional Rs.1.3 crore in cash.

The Income Tax Department is investigating the source of the cash,its intended destination and whether the money was backed by valid financial records.
