The Karnataka government has initiated technical measures to reduce disruption to mobile network services in areas surrounding the Mangaluru District Prison,following complaints from residents,Home,IT-BT and e-Governance Minister,Priyank Kharge said on Friday.
The minister said mobile signal jammers installed inside the prison premises were found to be causing an unintended impact on mobile connectivity in surrounding areas.
A joint technical survey has already been conducted, following which the concerned agency has taken steps to modify the antenna design and adjust the capacity of the jammers in accordance with the security requirements of the prison.
The measures are aimed at ensuring that the jammers continue to effectively serve their intended security purpose inside the prison while minimising their impact on mobile services in neighbouring areas.
The government is also coordinating with telecom service providers to make further technical adjustments to reduce the impact of the jammers on mobile network services.
“Prison security is of utmost importance,but it is equally necessary to ensure that residents and other users in the surrounding areas do not face unnecessary disruption to mobile connectivity.Technical solutions are being implemented to strike a balance between these two requirements,”Kharge said.
He added that necessary adjustments had already been made based on the joint technical survey and that further measures would be taken in coordination with telecom service providers to reduce inconvenience to the public.
The concerned departments and technical agencies are working together to improve mobile network quality in areas surrounding the prison while ensuring that the effectiveness of the prison’s security system is maintained.
