The Parappana Agrahara police have arrested a 28-year-old man from Assam for allegedly murdering his partner and attempting to mislead investigators by portraying her death as suicide,police said on Thursday.
The accused,Munnadas,a resident of Lakhipur in Assam’s Cachar district,had befriended Champoodas, 21,also from Assam,and brought her to Bengaluru.
The two were living together in a rented house in Naganathapura.
A kidnapping case was also registered against Munnadas for allegedly bringing the woman to Bengaluru.
On August 30,the house owner approached the police after Champoodas was found dead inside the rented house under suspicious circumstances.
Police initially registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) and sent the body for post-mortem examination.
However,the autopsy report received on September 15 stated that the cause of death was asphyxia and that violent asphyxia due to smothering could not be ruled out.
Based on the findings,police registered a murder case and launched a hunt for Munnadas.
During the investigation,police questioned several people and gathered information through informants.The accused was arrested the following day at Rayasandra.
During interrogation,Munnadas allegedly confessed to the murder,police said.
According to investigators,Champoodas had questioned him about their physical relationship and asked him to marry her.
Police allege that Munnadas strangled her and subsequently attempted to make the death appear to be a suicide.
Munnadas was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody,police said.
