Former Karnataka Chief Minister and Member of Parliament Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday said that Haveri University, despite functioning without any financial grants from the state government, is steadily progressing and will emerge as a model university in the coming years.
Speaking to reporters in Haveri,Bommai said the university is operating with very limited infrastructure, yet it is awarding degrees to a large number of students.
“Examinations are conducted smoothly and results are declared within 15 days. This shows the commitment of the institution,”he said.
He added that if the state government creates the minimum required teaching and non-teaching posts and makes necessary appointments,it would help the university qualify for University Grants Commission (UGC) funding in the future.“I will put pressure on the government to ensure this,”he said.
Responding to a question on the rise in crime and drug-related cases in the state,Bommai alleged that the situation clearly indicates police complicity.
“When Maharashtra police have to come and bust a drug manufacturing unit in Mysuru and drug-selling dens in Bengaluru,it shows that police here are colluding with drug traffickers,”he said.
He further claimed that drugs are freely available across the state, including within school and college limits in Ranebennur and Haveri.“We have warned the Superintendent of Police, but no action has been taken,” he alleged.
Bommai accused the government of allowing corruption in police postings.“When postings are given in exchange for money, police officers inevitably get involved in illegal activities. They are hand in glove with organised crime syndicates, real estate operators and drug peddlers,” he said.
Warning of serious consequences, the MP said,“Just as there was ‘Udta Punjab’, Karnataka is now heading towards becoming ‘Udta Karnataka’ if the government does not act immediately.
