The City Railway Police have arrested a man in connection with the fire that broke out in an empty railway coach at the KSR Bengaluru City Railway Station (Majestic).
Police suspect that the accused,allegedly under the influence of ganja, caused the fire after discarding a lit cigarette inside the coach.
The accused has been identified as Ravi Gorakh Tirv,a native of Nashik district in Maharashtra.
According to the police,Ravi, who works as a painter,had entered the vacant old coach late on Sunday night to sleep.While allegedly under the influence of ganja,he smoked a cigarette and threw the butt inside the coach.
The cigarette is suspected to have caused a small spark, which gradually spread and resulted in the fire.Realising that the coach had caught fire,Ravi reportedly got down from the train and fled the spot.
Following the incident,the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and City Railway Police launched a joint investigation and examined CCTV footage from the station. Based on the footage, police traced and arrested Ravi.
Police said the accused did not have a fixed place to stay and used to sleep at marriage halls and other public places.
After his arrest,Ravi was subjected to a medical examination at KC General Hospital and was subsequently produced before a magistrate.Further investigation is underway.
