The Karnataka unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha has approached the Malleshwaram Police seeking legal action against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi,alleging that she showed disrespect to Vande Mataram during a flag-hoisting programme at the Congress office in New Delhi on August 15.
In a complaint submitted to the Malleshwaram police on August 16,BJP Yuva Morcha state office-bearers alleged that Gandhi had objected to or attempted to stop the rendition of Vande Mataram during the Independence Day programme.
The complainants said they came across footage of the incident while watching a Republic TV video on YouTube at the BJP state office in Bengaluru on Sunday evening.
They have also provided the video link to the police as part of their complaint.
According to the complaint,the alleged conduct amounted to showing disrespect to the National Song and could lead to a disturbance of public peace.
The BJP Yuva Morcha has sought registration of a case and appropriate legal action against Gandhi.
The complainants have invoked provisions of the Prevention of Insults to National Honour legislation and Section 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), claiming that the alleged act constitutes an offence.
The complaint was submitted by BJP Yuva Morcha Karnataka office-bearers,including state secretary C. Deepak Kumar,state general secretary,Sandeep Ravi, state president,Thandaj Muniraju and Bengaluru Central district president Jagadish Chandra.
Police are yet to clarify whether an FIR has been registered or whether a preliminary inquiry will be conducted on the complaint.
