A 50-year-old man died under suspicious circumstances after being brought to a police station in Huliyaru of Tumakuru district,triggering protests by family members and villagers.
The deceased has been identified as Kantharaju (50),a resident of Yalanadu village.
Senior officer told reporters that he was among five persons detained for allegedly engaging in gambling during a village festival.After being brought to the station for questioning,Kantharaju reportedly collapsed within the premises.
He was immediately shifted to a nearby hospital,but doctors declared him dead.
Allegations of Custodial Assault
Family members and villagers have alleged that Kantharaju did not die a natural death, but was subjected to police brutality.They claimed he was physically assaulted and mentally harassed inside the station, leading to his death.
Protests Outside Police Station
As news of the death spread,angry villagers gathered in front of the police station, staging a protest with the body and raising slogans against the police.
The situation turned tense for some time, with heated arguments reported between the public and police personnel.
The protesters demanded strict action against the officers involved and justice for the victim’s family.
Leaders Visit,Demand Fair Probe Former minister JC. Madhuswamy and former MLA KS.Kiran Kumar visited the police station,consoled the family,and urged authorities to conduct an impartial investigation.
Senior police officials,including district authorities, visited the spot and reviewed the situation.
Post-mortem Awaited:
The body has been shifted to the district hospital for post-mortem examination.Officials said the exact cause of death will be known only after the report is received.
Police have assured that if any lapse or wrongdoing is found on their part, strict action will be taken.Additional security has been deployed in Huliyaru to maintain law and order.
