Traffic fine link fraud:Bengaluru techie loses Rs.5 lakh from credit card

A 45-year-old software engineer has lodged a complaint alleging that he was cheated in a phishing fraud involving a fake traffic challan payment link.

According to the complaint,on January 16,2026,the victim a software engineer received a text message from the mobile number containing a link claiming that a traffic challan of Rs.500 was pending.

Believing the message to be genuine,he clicked on the link and proceeded to make the payment.

While the website displayed a payment amount of Rs.500,after the complainant entered his card credentials,an amount of Rs.5,00,000 was fraudulently deducted from his ICICI Bank credit card.

Realising that he had been cheated,the victim immediately contacted his bank and later approached the police,seeking legal action against the unknown cyber fraudsters.

A case has been registered on Friday,and further investigation is under way to trace the accused and recover the amount.

Senior police officials of the traffic department advised people not to respond to such traffic fine messages.The police will not send any such information to the individual accounts,a senior officer clarified .
