Taking strong exception to instances of traffic personnel themselves violating road safety norms, the Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic),Karthik Reddy, has directed all traffic policemen to strictly adhere to traffic rules, including wearing helmets and seat belts while riding or driving official and personal vehicles.
In a circular issued on Saturday,Mr.Reddy said that following traffic rules is not only the responsibility of the general public but also the primary duty of police personnel, who are entrusted with enforcing the law.
Failure by policemen to comply with traffic regulations not only weakens enforcement,he noted, but also exposes the department to embarrassment and criticism, particularly on social media platforms.
The circular makes it mandatory for all traffic and law and order, crime staff police personnel to follow traffic rules without exception.
Mr. Reddy warned that violations by policemen would invite action under the Indian Motor Vehicles (IMV) Act, reiterating that no leniency would be shown in such cases.
