The Halasurgate police on Tuesday arrested a man and son from Rajasthan for allegedly cheating a city-based jeweller of gold ornaments worth Rs.1.60 crore.
The accused have been identified as Rajendra Kumar and his son Jeevan, residents of Nehru Nagar in Sheshadripuram,having a jewellery shop and used to buy gold valuables from the complainant on share of profit basis.
Senior officer told reporters that the complainant,a jeweller from Nagarathpet,alleged that between July 28 and September 4,the duo had taken gold ornaments from him on the pretext of selling them for a share in the profit but neither returned the ornaments nor paid the sale proceeds.
After repeated follow ups,the complainant approached the police and filed a complaint .
Following a complaint filed on September 8,the Halasurgate police registered a case and arrested the accused from their residence.
The accused initially pleaded that they had incurred business loss and not able to pay,but a detailed probe revealed that they had melted the gold ornaments and converted them into a gold bar,which they had hidden at their house.
Based on their information,the police recovered a 1.3 kg gold bar valued at Rs.1.60 crore from the residence,”the police said in a statement.
The duo has been booked under cheating and criminal breach of trust and remanded into judicial custody.
