Bengaluru: IISc woman scientist held in ‘digital arrest’,scammers loot Rs 8.80 lakhs

Posing as CBI officer,cyber Fraudster duped a 49-year-old scientist with the Indian Institute of Science,threatened her to arrest her under human trafficking case and made away with Rs.8.8 lakh .

Based on the complaint by Senior IISC scientist the Central Division cyber crime police charged the unknown accused under IT act and also under section 318 (cheating,specifically, fraudulently or dishonestly inducing someone to deliver property)on Wednesday.

According to the complaint,the fraudster posing as CBI officer called Dr.Sandya informing her that she has been booked under as many as 17 criminal cases.

He also informed her that her mobile number has been used to commit criminal activities which is being probed by CBI.

The caller also informed her that the CBI had obtained Supreme Court permission to arrest her and showed some fake documents of arrest warrant.

The accused also offered to help and persuaded her to transfer the money amounting to Rs.8.8 lakh online between September 17 to September 19.

The cheating came to light when she discussed the issue with her family and friends who suggested her that she has been duped by cyber frauds to approach the police .

The police have requested people not to entertain unknown calls which claim to be from police and demand money for official favour.
