‘Women-led Startups and Leadership in Science and Innovation will be the Hallmark of Growth Story in the North Eastern Region’ says Dr. Jitendra Singh at a conference at Miranda House, Delhi

Ushering in its 75th year, which also happens to be the year of G20 headed by India, Miranda House organised a two-day International Conference on ‘Startups, Sustainability, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in North East India’. The college plans to incubate student-led startups very soon.

Emphasizing on the immense contribution and resources available in the North Eastern Region, Union Minister of State, PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances,Pensions, MoS(I/C), Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences and MoS, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr.Jitendra Singhwho inaugurated the conference, talked about the increasing connect of North-eastern Region with the rest of India and more students coming to mainland. He also said that Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji had visited North East almost 60 times and it shows how the region has been getting due attention in Amrit Kal and India’s 75 years of Independence. He also said that in the Modi Government, there are now almost 9000 startups and more than 100 unicorns of which 36 happen to be women and it shows the gender equal era that we have entered in.He talked about North Eastern Region being an inherent land of innovation and startups and women are taking lead roles in entrepreneurship, scientificinnovation, and sustainability. He talked about more synergy and integration between North Eastern Region and the rest of the country which will guide the overall development. He also said that there are great opportunities in the region of North East in terms of natural resources as we have seen in the case of Himalayan region, Aroma Mission, Ocean Resources and Start up revolution. Hailing Miranda House for appropriately organising this international conference on ‘Startups, Sustainability, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in North East India’. Hecalled upon the students and faculty to gear up for futuristic vision based on traditional knowledge . He also referred to Wise Kiran Program being run by DST and how Mentorship programs for women-led startups can be encouraged.

Principal, Miranda House, Dr. Bijayalaxmi Nanda said that the college plans to create Atmanirbhar Bharat Ki Atmanirbhar Betiyan.She said, the conference will provide a platform for participants to share their experiences, best practices and innovate solution to the North East region’s challenges. It will also provide networking and collaboration opportunitiesamong stakeholders, including policymakers, practitioners, civil society organisations and the private sector. Shesaid that such conferences will pave the way for innovation and sustainability to take on a more active role in promoting women and youth in the North Eastern region and the college will bring together all stakeholders to realise this task.

Prof. Rajni Abbi, Chairperson of Miranda Houseand Proctor, University of Delhisaid that the vision of sustainability and innovation is aligned to the vision of the University of Delhi in the era of Amrit Kal.

Prof. K. Ratnabali, Dean Academics, said that the skill innovation and entrepreneurship needs to be contextualised as per the needs of the North Eastern region, keeping in mind the Sustainable Development Goals, the resources it has as well as the cultural nuances of the region.

Rakhee Bakshee from Her World India called about the outreach initiative and future communication plans for the North East Regional Research and Resource Centre.

This two-day conference is aligned with the spirit of Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat with its focus on the integrationof the North Eastern region with the rest of the country in the year of India’s presidency of the G20. The expected outcomes of the international conference organised by Miranda house will be:

  • Development of policy interventions and strategies for promoting sustainable development in the North East India.
  • Increased engagement and collaboration between stakeholders from academia, government, civil society, and the private sector.
  • Enhanced participation of women in sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurship sectors.

The program ended with the vote of thanks by Prof. Bashabi Gupta. Miranda House.

The Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh also visited one of the Multidisciplinary Research Centre run by the Physics Department of the College and interacted with the students.
