AbhijitRay,Kolkata:The excavation of Clive House in Dum Dum Central Jail area at Kolkata proved that Kolkata isa more than two-and-a-half thousand-year-old city. From that Dum Dum, a new chapter has been added to the history of Kolkata, the City of Joy. After a 20-day-long effort, the huge cannon, more than two centuries old, was finally recovered from the ground floor in Dum Dum on Wednesday. Biplob Roy, the administrator general and official trustee of the state government, was one of the biggest contributors to the recovery of the cannon. He said that the length of this cannon is 10 feet 8 inches. It is the largest of the cannons recovered in Kolkata. Two cannons were lying on the ground on both sides of Jessore Road at the intersection of Dum Dum Central Jail. A portion of the ground could be seen on top of the ground. Biplob Roy joined hands in the rescue of the cannon. The excavation began on March 15. But, the danger started by digging one and a half feet of soil. Due to numerous cables of high voltage electricity under the ground, up to five feet were dug up. Then it is excavated in phases. The excavation continued last Friday. After digging up to seven and a half feet, the work stopped. Because the electricity cable was still hot. On this day, CESC staff started digging the soil. Mr. Biplobwas accompanied by the state’s cannon and antique gun expert Mr. Amitabh Karkun and Dum Dum historian Mr. Gaur Maulik. The cannon is lifted up to the end by removing the soil and putting it in a crane.. The cannon was pressed into the matador and taken to the New Secretariat building on the same day. There will be a scientific cleaning and sent to the museum.Mr.AmitabhKarkun said that the cannon has been recovered intact, which is a big achievement. The cannon that is in the Town Hall of Kolkata is 9 feet in length. It’s bigger than that. This is the largest number of rescued cannons in the state so far. Initially, it is believed that the cannon was built between 1760-1770. We’ll do more testing. I found some new patterns in the outside.Historian Gaur Maulik said, “We want another cannon to be recovered at Dum Dum Central Jail intersection. The history of Dum Dum should also be preserved. Shyamapada Das, the distribution engineer of CESC, said, “20 of us, including two engineers, and two supervisors, have worked. We are also happy to have recovered the cannon.
