Two construction workers were killed and three others injured after a portion of earth caved in at an underpass construction site near Kanteerava Studio in Bengaluru on Tuesday morning.
The incident occurred around 10.45 am at the BDA Kanteerava Studio underpass,where the turnkey project is being executed by PJB Engineers Pvt.Ltd,the contractor appointed by the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA).
According to the BDA,the earth caved in while construction work was underway,affecting five workers.
Two workers,identified as Sonaram from Odisha and Parimal Baashak from West Bengal,died in the accident.
The three injured workers have been identified as Sadanand from Jharkhand,Imrias from Chhattisgarh and Sunil Kalkor from Jharkhand.They are undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital.
The BDA said it is coordinating with the Labour Department and the respective district administrations to make arrangements to send the mortal remains of the deceased workers to their native places.
Independent inquiry ordered:
BDA Chairman has ordered an independent inquiry into the accident to ascertain the exact cause of the earth collapse.
The inquiry committee will comprise a retired judge and a retired chief engineer and has been directed to submit its report within 45 days.
Rs.8 lakh compensation to each family:
The BDA has announced ₹8 lakh compensation each to the families of the two deceased workers.
The authority also said it would bear the medical expenses of the three injured workers and provide necessary assistance to them and their families.
The BDA expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and said all necessary measures were being taken to ensure the injured workers receive appropriate medical treatment.
