Karnataka Prisons and Correctional Services Department Director General of Police Alok Kumar on Thursday inaugurated the ‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery’and launched the ‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery on Wheels’ initiative at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, in collaboration with the HCL Foundation.
During the programme,Alok Kumar inspected the bakery products prepared by inmates and appreciated their taste and quality.
He also interacted with the inmates and stressed the importance of quality and hygiene while preparing bakery products.
The department said newly sentenced inmates who complete training in bakery equipment and product preparation would be provided certificates,helping them acquire skills that could support their rehabilitation and livelihood after release.
The ‘Nava Sankalpa Bakery on Wheels’was subsequently flagged off.
The mobile bakery units will sell quality bakery products at various court complexes and bus stations across Bengaluru.
The bakery is among the modern bakery units established in prisons across the country.
The Bengaluru Central Prison team has played a key role in setting up the unit and developing the initiative.
The programme is aimed at generating additional revenue for the government through the sale of bakery products while helping inmates develop vocational skills and prepare for life after their release.
Later,undertrial prisoners from Bengaluru Central Prison visited various sections of the facility and inspected security arrangements.
Representatives of HCL Foundation,including Chetana Theerthahalli,Joshua Livingstone and Milly Agarwal,and Sri Sri Rural Development Programme Trust representatives Ramanujan Muraleedharan and R.N. Mirani were present at the event.
