The KR.Puram police have arrested two men,including a BTech graduate from Hyderabad and a security guard, for allegedly honeytrapping a woman through social media and extorting over Rs.1 crore worth of gold and cash.
The accused have been identified as Mahesh (36),a BTech graduate from Hyderabad,and Swamy,a security guard.
Senior officer told reporters that Mahesh,who is married but separated,was addicted to online gaming and had incurred huge debts.In a bid to repay loans,he allegedly devised a plan to target the victim.
During questioning it was revealed that the victim,a married woman with two children and wife of a realtor, befriended the accused on social media around one-and-a-half years ago.

The relationship gradually turned personal,following which the accused began exploiting her trust.Under the pretext of financial distress,they allegedly convinced her to hand over gold ornaments and valuables worth more than Rs.1 crore.
Investigations revealed that after spending the money on gambling and other vices,the accused began threatening and blackmailing the woman,demanding more money.
The victim,unable to endure the harassment,approached the KR Puram police station and lodged a complaint on February 10, 2026.
Based on the complaint,a special team led by Inspector Rammurthy B launched an investigation.One of the accused was tracked down and arrested on March 3 from Kondur village in Nizamabad district,Telangana.
During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and disclosed the involvement of his associate.
Acting on the leads,police arrested the second accused from Anantapur,Andhra Pradesh,on March 19.Both accused were taken into police custody for further questioning.
Police said the accused had pledged the stolen gold ornaments in two banks and a jewellery shop in Hyderabad.
Based on their statements,officers recovered 571 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs.85.65 lakh between March 20 and March 23.
Both the accused were produced before the court on March 24 and have been remanded to judicial custody.
Further investigation is underway.
