Fake FB account made in the name of Bengaluru City Police Chief probe ordered

The Cyber Crime Police have registered an FIR after a fake Facebook account impersonating the Commissioner of Police,Bengaluru City,during routine social media monitoring.

According to the complaint,on Thursday,cyber crime media monitoring cell noticed that an unknown person had created a Facebook profile using the name and photographs of the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, Seemant Kumar Singh.

The fake account was allegedly used to mislead members of the public and cheat them of money. Police said the impersonator contacted unsuspecting individuals under false pretences, leading to several complaints from victims who were allegedly defrauded.

The fraudulent Facebook profile (ID: 615874907397200) was found to be repeatedly reused to gain public trust by falsely projecting official authority.

Following the detection,a complaint was filed seeking identification of the accused and initiation of appropriate legal action against the person behind the fake social media account.

Police have taken up investigation and a case has been registered under Identity theft and and cheating by impersonation under It Act for further investigations.
