A drunk driver in Bengaluru rammed a bullet and dragged the rider for 500 metres at Summanahalli flyover in Kamakshipalya on thursday evening.
The car driver left behind a trail of sparks and shocked commuters behind.
The accused driver has been identified as, Srinivas.
Despite attempts by commuters to alert the driver,the SUV did not stop.Some motorists recorded videos of the incident on their mobile phones and shared them on social media as the vehicle continued along the stretch.
The SUV was eventually blocked by commuters near the Nayandahalli junction,where the driver was handed over to the police.
An alcohol test confirmed that the driver,Srinivas KV of Kunigal,was driving under the influence of Alcohol. Police said he also hit another car and a motorbike while being chased.
The incident began when the SUV rammed into a Bullet motorcycle ridden by Rohit S while heading towards Sunkadakatte.
“The SUV rear-ended my Bullet,throwing me down.I saw the SUV continue to move with my Bullet stuck in the front.
It dragged my bike for almost 500 metres before it got separated,”Rohit told reporters.He later filed an FIR with the Kamakshipalya traffic police.
Kamakshipalya traffic Police registered a case against Srinivas,a wine shop owner from Kunigal in Tumakuru district,who admitted to consuming alcohol due to personal issues.
“I panicked after hitting the Bullet and was not aware it was stuck.When people shouted,I thought they were reacting to the collision,”he told the police says reports.
A senior police officer confirmed that Srinivasa did not stop and dragged the motorcycle for about half a kilometre.
“Midway,he crashed into two more vehicles, prompting other commuters to chase and intercept him,”the officer said.
When intercepted,Srinivasa allegedly refused to step out of the car and locked himself inside.An agitated crowd broke a window,pulled him out,assaulted him, before handing him over to the police.A purported video of the accident has captured the entire sequence of events.
Kamakshipalya traffic police have booked Srinivasa under Sections 281 (rash driving on a public way) and 125(a) (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.
Police have also booked him for drunk driving,seized his car,and said they will recommend cancellation of his driving licence.As the offences are bailable,he is currently out on bail.
