The Karnataka Police Department has announced a statewide special drive against drunken driving and other traffic violations from December 24 to December 31,ahead of New Year celebrations.
In a circular issued by the office of the Director General and Inspector General of Police (DG &IGP),the police have been directed to take stringent action against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol.
The directive follows a meeting chaired by Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre,former Supreme Court judge and Chairman of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety,held on December 19 to review road safety measures in the State.
The committee observed that incidents of road accidents caused by drunken driving tend to rise significantly during festive and New Year celebrations, leading to an increase in fatalities and injuries.
In view of this,the police have been instructed to intensify enforcement across all police units in the State.
According to the order,all unit heads have been directed to ensure that station house officers conduct a special enforcement drive within their jurisdictions.
Apart from cases of drunken driving,police have been instructed to book cases against motorists for violations including riding without helmets,driving without seat belts,over speeding,wheeling,triple riding and using mobile phones while driving.
The special drive will be implemented across all police commissionerates and district police units,including Bengaluru city and KGF,under the supervision of senior officers.
