In a significant verdict,the Additional District and Sessions Court,Hospet,has sentenced three persons to seven years’simple imprisonment for assaulting and attempting to murder a police constable while he was performing government duty.
The incident took place on 14 March 2020 at about 1.20 am in front of the main mosque in Hospet town.
At the time,Police Constable Muthanna (PC No.74) was on night duty when he noticed three persons riding two motorcycles fitted with silencers,creating loud noise and disturbance.
When the constable stopped them and advised them not to cause disturbance and to return home, the accused allegedly turned aggressive.The accused were identified as:
A1:Annappa,s/o Hanumappa, resident of Talawarakeri, Hospet.
A2:Srikanth,s/o Basappa, resident of Banadakeri.
A3:Maula Hussain, s/o Anwar Basha,resident of Halemalapanagudi.
According to the prosecution,A1 Annappa threatened the constable and deliberately hit him with his motorcycle at high speed.
A2 Srikanth and A3 Maula Hussain allegedly held the constable,assaulted him with a stone causing bleeding injuries, and instigated further attack.As a result of the assault,the constable sustained injuries and fell unconscious.
Based on the complaint,the case was investigated by Prasad K.Gokhale,Police Inspector,who completed the investigation and filed a charge sheet under Sections 307,353,332,341,504,506 read with 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
After examining prosecution witnesses and hearing arguments,the Court,presided over by D.P. Kumaraswamy,on 17 December 2025,held that the prosecution had proved beyond reasonable doubt that A1 to A3 assaulted and attempted to murder a police officer while on government duty.
The court sentenced each of the accused to Seven years’simple imprisonment,and Fine of Rs.58,000 each
Out of the fine amount:
Rs.30,000 is to be paid as compensation to the injured police constable Muthanna (PC No.74).
Rs.28,000 shall be remitted to the government.
In this case,Shivunayaka (HC No. 210) of Hospet Town Police Station extended cooperation by ensuring timely production of witnesses before the court.
The case was effectively prosecuted by Mr.T.Ambanna, Government Prosecutor,who conducted witness examination and argued the matter,resulting in the conviction of the accused.
